so for my dad's birthday Tuesday, i'm making a cake into his favorite car: a Ford GT40 from Le Mans racing, in Gulf colors, that won at Sebring in 1969, #22. (he's awefully spacific, isn't he?).
So i asked what type of cake, frosting, and filling he wanted, the rest is (was) a surprise (had to ask a question about the hood that kinda gave it away...). It's a dark chocolate cake, with a peach Grand Marnier filling, and chocolate icing (only the filling is mine. Thank you Betty Crocker BOGOF). I baked 3 13x9, filled and stacked them, then began to carve. I'll scan my ref sheet later, but there's marks, dimensions, and conversions all over it. lol. Carving cake is hard work! I iced it then ran to work.
I'll cover it in fondant tomorrow (yay, orange flavored!), maybe cut out the tracers for the airbrush and plan out my decals. monday i'll actually color and decorate. (ie, pipe lines, air brush, make 'decals' and tires, and maybe try my 'glass').
I think it's going well, and next week it seems i'm making a Corvair cake for the recent passing of the head of a Corvair society (who gave me $500 for college).
and since Matty'll be here tomorrow: Fantastic 4!, figuring out how he wants his hood attached, finishing his cloak, a little showing off at work (sorry love, seems you're going to have to juggle!) and general hanging-outness. weeeee!
My cake now:
